As you all know, my theme is artwork which reflects the balance between structure and randomness. This piece, entitled 42 Lines from Random Numbers, uses EXCEL spreadsheet to generate pairs of numbers, an angle from 1 to 360 degrees and a length from 1 to 30cm. Angles were measured clockwise from the end of the previous line. The first line was drawn from whichever corner it was possible to do so (in this case the bottom right). If a line hits the frame then it bounces like a snooker ball and completes its length. I am doing a series of these where I also use a random number to decide how many lines to draw.
The set of rules for the generation of my art work defines its structure and is therefore an integral part of the work. I suppose in a way I am using EXCEL as a readymade!
